I know this doesn’t relate at all to music but this is crazy. For those who missed out last night (including me), M.I.A., Franz Ferdinand, T.I., NERD, and Chaka Khan took over Brooklyn and performed for the Diesel xXx circus extravaganza. M.I.A. then premiered her massive baby bump in spandex and a leather jacket:

Would explain why she randomly cancelled her European tour over the summer and why shes going into “retirement”
Kanye West has just been arrested at LAX for felony vandalism about an hour ago.
…That’s when Kanye lunged toward him and said, “Give me the fu***ng videotape.” Cops had to restrain Kanye as he tried coming at Erik.

> No I.D. joins Kanye behind the boards for Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3.
> Speaking of Blueprint 3 via TSS:
+ Kanye will indeed be producing most, if not all, of the album. Remember back in the day when an artist would do a whole album with one producer for cohesiveness? Think classic Snoop or Jeru with Primo… and fast forward it to 2008.
+ Jay will be leaking the finished version of “Jockin” as soon as he adds a new 3rd verse to the song.
+ Tracks to look for include the aforementioned “Jockin’ Jay-Z” and a new track entitled “Victory” that the rumor mill says is simply amazing.
> Jay-Z takes the opportunity to shoot a little line or two at Oasis‘ Noel Gallagher over this Kanye West producing first track off of Blueprint 3.
That bloke from Oasis said I can’t play guitar/Somebody should’ve told him I’m a f*cking Roc star/Today is gonna be the day I’m gonna throw it back to you.
WATCH video of the MSG debut here.
Noel for his part recently said: I wasn’t saying I was better than Jay-Z as a person or rock was greater than hip-hop as a thing or whatever it is.“I said what I said, and it was wrong, or it was taken wrong, and now all this. For my own part I can sit here and say I never dissed that guy. I never would. But there’s no point in going on about it, because you end up sounding like Heather Mills: ‘I said this! I meant that!’ I’ll have a beer with him one day and it’ll all be fine. (Source: XXL and SDSU)

> Rolling Stones is shrinking: The U.S. pop culture magazine will end the oversized look that for more than 30 years has distinguished it from rival publications starting with an issue set to hit newsstands on October 17.

> AtEase is reporting that Radiohead will contribute a new song as well as ambient music for the film adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s book Choke. Palahniuk said that he wrote Choke while listening to Pablo Honey (especially “Creep”) on repeat.
> Pharaohe Monch discusses THREE upcoming projects at Urban Daily:
In addition to preparing a Making of Internal Affairs (the ten year anniversary of the classic disc is next year) Monch will be releasing “The Hidden Years” which is the music he recorded between Internal Affairs and Desire.
His first project, Let My People Go, should be out later this year and hopes to bridge the gap between some of today’s artists and fans of his peers.
“Music should be a little more free. We shouldn’t be criticizing as much as we do,” he told The Urban Daily. “The artist and the radio are just as much at fault. But here is a piece of music that you can like. There’s a lot of collaborations. Where as Desire was more just me holding it down, this is going to have some special appearances.”
His second project is a double EP called Rock Vs. Disco. The concept CD is a period piece that takes place in the late 70s and early 80s when Disco emerged and challenged Rock.
“ I grew up on both so this project is like a double EP with a rock influenced side and a disco influenced side. I’m gonna have t-shirts that say Rock vs Disco: Which Do you love?
“Then I have a concept record called the Verses Project with producers I’ve never worked with before. It’ll come out like a comic book and be distributed digitally. It’ll be like Pharoahe vs. Premier and Pharoahe vs RZA. Then you can purchase the whole [series] for . “

> The Avalanches are finally putting the finishing touches on their second album… 7 years after they put out Since I Left You. I forgot how much I LOVED that album… expect a post coming up with my favorite tracks.

> Ever wonder what the baby on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind is up to now? 17 year-old techno fan Spencer Elden thinks it would’ve been a lot “cooler” to be a teen in the early ’90s.
> Clipse’s upcoming album — which is currently scheduled to drop this November — will feature an as-yet untitled track produced by Rick Rubin.
> Q-Tip isn’t a fan of the way that music blogs contribute to the “sensory overload” of the internet age, but I’m sure BEATCAKES isn’t one of them.
> Not only are the Backstreet Boys back in the studio working on their sixth album, but a pair of them are working on solo albums: A.J. McLean’s is almost finished, while Howie Dorough’s will explore his Latin roots with the help of Jon Secada and George Noriega.
Beck, Man Man, TV on the Radio, and Broken Social Scene tour dates after the jump.
Kanye to retire soon?
The MT rumor states:
The music insider explained to MediaTakeOut.com, “He’s been through a lot in the past year and I know he’s just not into [music] like he was before.” The insider added, “When I spoke to him, he just kept talking about how he wanted to go into fashion. [To] create his own label and all that.”
And according to our insider, it wouldn’t be the worst move for him. The executive told MediaTakeOut.com, “Right now he’s at the top of his game … and it’s always best to go out on top.”

NYT:
With performers on six main stages and various smaller ones, dozens of individual band tales converge at Bonnaroo. M.I.A., the Sri Lankan rapper now based in Brooklyn, has canceled her summer tour, but she tore into her seismic beats and revolution-touting hooks here, in what she declared was her “last gig ever.” (Pop retirements are rarely permanent.)

Speaking of Bonnaroo, apparently Kanye hates hippies but loves dick.
“Kanye Sucks! Kanye Sucks! Kanye Sucks!” At least that’s what the crowd at Bonnaroo was chanting when West, scheduled to perform at 8:15pm, went on at 4:25am.

Genre-bending Brit singer M.I.A. is engaged to a member of Montreal’s affluent Bronfman clan, Sun Media has learned.
The performer became engaged last week to Benjamin Brewer, the son of Warner Music Group Chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr., according to sources close to the singer. Brewer is a guitarist for New York alt-rock band The Exit, whose biggest claim to fame might be having the song Susan appear on the American Pie 2 soundtrack. It is not known if the couple has set a wedding date or location.
M.I.A., 30, is touring Canada in support of her 2007 CD Kala. She made a stop in Toronto on Monday of this week. In an interview with Sun Media then, M.I.A. said she might have to get married to stay in the U.S., or move to Montreal following the expiration of her American work visa in June.
M.I.A. was born Mathangi Arulpragasam in London, England. She was raised in Sri Lanka, her family’s native country, before they returned to London — as refugees.
Remember when that beautiful Prince perfomance of Radiohead’s “Creep” at Coachella was posted on BEATCAKES and all the other 928390452 blogs last month? Maybe not, because we all had to take it down shortly after since the video stopped working because of the people at Prince’s label. Well, it’s recently back on Youtube (video after the article for those who missed it):
After word spread that Prince covered Radiohead’s “Creep” at the Coachella festival, the tens of thousands who couldn’t be there ran to YouTube for a peek. Everyone was quickly denied — even Radiohead.
All videos of Prince’s unique rendition of Radiohead’s early hit were quickly taken down, leaving only a message that his label, NPG Records, had removed the clips, claiming a copyright violation. But the posted videos were shot by fans and, obviously, the song isn’t Prince’s.
In a recent interview, Thom Yorke said he heard about Prince’s performance from a text message and thought it was “hilarious.” Yorke laughed when his bandmate, guitarist Ed O’Brien, said the blocking had prevented even him from seeing Prince’s version of their song.
“Really? He’s blocked it?” asked Yorke, who figured it was their song to block or not. “Surely we should block it. Hang on a moment.” Yorke added, “Well, tell him to unblock it. It’s our … song.” [Billboard]

- BEATCAKES is expanding! BEATCAKES welcomes our newest blogger, Florante. Keep a look out for his weekly posts solely dedicated to style: “Wednesdays in Style with Yves Saint Florante.” Hailing from LA, he’ll be giving us insight on the sites and sounds from that other coast we tend to forget about here on the blog. woohoo!!

RSVP Here. Experienced Faux Punk last year at the Alive release party at Studio B. Twas a really good time filled with the usual drunk and hoppin’ Europeans. The project is comprised of seven new tracks on the Itunes version (five on the CD) as well as mastered versions of nine tracks from their 2007 Mick Boogie mixtape of the same name.
- Get it right. Santogold does not want her music to be called hip-hop: “I didn’t grow up as a big fan of R&B and, like, what is the big shocker? It’s stupid. In the beginning I thought that was funny. I’m an ‘MC’, I’m a ’soul singer’, I’m a ‘dance hybrid artist’. And some guy said I looked like Kelly Rowland! My album is a pop record. I made sure it was.” Alright already. I’m pretty sure she said that she used to rap back in the day.

It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that, creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It’s that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it.” (Source)
